Our Story

We’re probably like you.

We grew up in a world where people are driven by dreams of big houses and expensive cars. Our dreams were a little different. We were curious. Most of all, we were curious about creating positive change in the world, and we were tired of waiting for someone else to show us the ‘right’ way. We knew that our perspective was limited, that we needed to get out into the world to meet new people, to learn about different cultures and to begin building bridges with them. We needed to get our hands dirty. We needed to live in a new place, not just observe it.

We were poor students at the time. Hungry for learning, but unsatisfied by conventional classes, we decided to go out into the world and try volunteering abroad. The only problem was we couldn’t find a single organization that we could afford. After doing more research, we found that many of the volunteering abroad opportunities that exist are run by for-profit companies. So, in 2006, after being heavily disappointed with the options open to us, we set out to do it ourselves. We spent months meeting and connecting with amazing locals, found incredible partners and set up a program we could be proud of. In the process we created lifelong friends in Sandhema, Larabanga, Accra and everywhere in between.

It turned out that we did the right thing. When we got home to promote the trip, it seemed like every young person was looking for a way to connect with the world. We found our participants with ease. Since 2006, demand for OG trips has been overwhelming. We believe it’s because our programs offer something unique. We bring cool, caring people together who want to explore the world while being active in it. We are not just trying to be a travel company. We’re trying to spark a movement of globally active and committed backpackers. Wanna join?

Testimonials

Volunteering with OG truly was the best way not only to learn about the world, but about myself. If you’ve been thinking about doing something like this, but aren’t quite sure: I say take the plunge and just do it.
